Reviews:

''A New Day at Midnight'' is the sixth studio album by British singer-songwriter David Gray, released on 28 October 2002 in the UK and 5 November 2002 in the US. The album entered the UK Albums Chart at #1 upon its opening week, and spent a total of 49 weeks on the chart.

''A New Day at Midnight'' produced two singles: "The Other Side" in December 2002, and "Be Mine" in April 2003. "Dead in the Water" was released as a promo-only single in November 2002. Both commercial singles failed to break into the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart, peaking at #35 and #23 respectively. The album received critically mixed reviews, but went on to be certified platinum four times.

The album is dedicated to David Gray's father, Peter, who died of cancer in 2001 at the height of Gray's popularity. A song entitled "A New Day at Midnight," written about the birth of his first daughter, Ivy, was written during the album's recording sessions but was not included on the album. - Wikipedia

There is an amazing irony in David Gray's story to date. Although he wasaudibly wrestling with his creative direction, Gray's first four albumsearned him critical props and a cultish following everywhere except within recordcompanies, who volleyed him back and forth like a Wimbledon warm-up. It wasn'tuntil he turned his back on the whole mess, positive and negative, and createdin the relative vacuum of his London apartment that he was able to fashion theunaffected brilliance of White Ladder. The wisdom of Gray's moveis borne out by the five million albums that White Ladder has sold inthe two years since its release.

The incredible side door success of Ladder has provided Gray with a potentargument for leaving him to his own devices, which is exactly how A New Dayat Midnight, his sixth and best album, came to be. With the only concessionto success being upgraded microphones, Gray and his astonishing co-creator Clunehave taken everything that was pure and good and honest about White Ladderand tweaked it upward ever so slightly. The beauty of both Ladder andMidnight is in the way that Gray has synthesized the genres that comprisehis influences, making something fresh and unique and engaging out of a dozenidioms—from folk ("Last Boat to America") to electronica ("Deadin the Water") to country ("Caroline") to pop ("Long DistanceCall")—that have sounded listless and uninspired in less skilled hands.White Ladder proved that David Gray had the passion to create great artwithout any outside interference. A New Day at Midnight proves that Grayknows how to stay out of his own way as well.
