'Soulight' is based on an original concept of Phil Deal. His liner notes read, in part, 'Soulight celebrates the eternal life force whose light animates every life form in the universe.' The recording is an aural expression of soulight and it's manifestation in time and space. The all-acoustic nature of this recording emphasizes one aspect of Inside/Out Trio. The trio also utilizes synthesizers and electronically processed vocals in other contexts. On 'Soulight,' however, Phil Deal performs on alto and soprano saxophones, Tibetan bowl (he opens 'Spirit Speaks' with it), kalimba, kazooreed (an instrument of Deal's design), Hawai'ian bamboo flute, Mexican clay flute and vocals (unprocessed). Kevin Fellezs performs on a Yamaha acoustic grand piano (including inside the piano work on 'Spirit Speaks'). Richard Freeman performs on various percussion instruments, including a traps drum kit, as well as on djembe and doumbec (listen to 'Spirit Speaks' for an example of his hand drumming skills). Inside/Out Trio would like to thank Michael Cogan, owner of Bay Recording Studios (Berkeley, CA), and engineer on this project. The cover art features an original watercolor painting by Phil Deal entitled 'Lunar Pulse.' : : A SHORT (ER) HISTORY OF INSIDE/OUT TRIO : : Inside/Out Trio formed out of the shared interest of Phil Deal, Kevin Fellezs, and Richard Freeman in the exploration of creative, improvisational music. Inside/Out Trio evolved steadily, always driven by the principles of free association and improvisation. As the name of the group, Inside/Out, indicates, we improvise both 'inside' and 'outside' of conventional musical gestures.
